The First Ever Trans Wizard Tournament!
Jun. 7th, 2020 10:39 pmJK Rowling is back on her shit. She has a problem with not knowing when to leave well-enough alone. Not only are the Harry Potter books are riddled with problematic stereotypes and characterisation, but even since the end of the series, she just can't seem to stop herself from making more and more additions to the story and characters that reinforce hurtful, negative stereotypes, and she makes inflammatory posts about sensitive issues that affect many of her fans.
Times are especially difficult across the world right now, and fandom provides a much needed escape. It is painful to see the creator of such a well-loved children's series use her powerful voice to sow hate and discord.
As a member of the queer community, I believe any form of gatekeeping is an effort to tear us apart from within. We need to be intersectional at all levels, lifting up our brothers and sisters and non-binary siblings of all orientation, skin colour, nationality, and walks of life.
I'll admit, my first thought on seeing Rowling's most recent slew of disgusting tweets, was "how can I allow my son and nephew (who is trans) be exposed to, and come to love her work, only to discover her true nature as I did?" But then I realised, Harry Potter doesn't belong just to her anymore. She can only destroy it if we let her. Fandom has, from its very beginnings, been about finding community and representation where it is otherwise denied.
And it struck me--what better way to push back against against Rowling’s narrow-minded and hateful statements than using the characters and world she created to help raise money for transgender rights. So I introduce to you, the first ever Trans Wizard Tournament!
In the spirit of past fandom fundraising auctions such as Fandom Hates Trump and Fandom Loves Puerto Rico, the Trans Wizard Tournament will allow fans to bid on new content from their favourite fandom creators, with winning bidders donating to one or several of our approved charities. The twist here is that this the prompts will centre around trans and nonbinary portrayals of of characters from the Harry Potter fandom.
More specific details, such as the schedule for signing up, bidding, proof of donations, and posting of creations, as well as a list of charities, and guidelines for content creators and bidders is coming very soon. The goal is tentatively to post the created content beginning on July 31st as a special present to not only JK Rowling, but a celebration of Harry Potter’s birthday, too.
I am asking any members of Harry Potter fandom and the trans community who are willing and able to help with this project to contact me. I need help organising and reaching out to content creators to participate. I’d love to have additional content to offer for auction, as in previous fandom auctions, whether prints of previously created artwork on the theme, special content specifically created for auction, or items of particular interest to the trans community.
Keep an eye on this journal for updates coming soon!
*I am an ally, and I might not get everything right. Please correct me if I have misspoken here.

Date: 2020-06-08 09:46 am (UTC)I'm villainous-queer on tumblr and reblogged your original post suggesting a couple charities that have helped me personally and are doing good work here in the US. We might set up localised choices if we can't find an international trans org.
