ETA: All donations are confirmed, and our new total is

$916 USD for our trans charities and foundations during the Trans Wizard Tournament.

I can't tell you how proud I am of fandom for pulling together on such a short timeline to create something so wonderful. Thank you to everyone who signed up to participate, all our bidders, those who signal-boosted, and those who donated time and energy to the tournament. Each and every one of you contributed to the success, and without you this never would have been possible. I'd once again like to extend extra thanks to queenofthyme, who has been such invaluable help during this whole process as my co-mod.

At this point in time, all creators and donors who have provided proof of donation can begin working together if you haven't already. Creators, once you have completed your work(s), you can post them to the
AO3 Collection. This is not a requirement of participation, but I would encourage those who are willing and able to do so. You can post at anytime between now and October 31st, 2020 (the deadline for gifts to be created and presented to donors, unless otherwise discussed ahead of time). The collection will be unveiled on July 31st, 2020, as a gift to JKR, to show that not even her hatred can ruin what she created--it belongs to us now.

Creators, you are free to post on any other sites, but please do tag it with Trans Wizard Tournament and let us know, so we can signal boost your works!

I've had many questions about next year. With the amount of interest, and what we managed to accomplish just this year on such a short and hectic timeline, the short answer is yes, we will be doing the Trans Wizard Tournament again. Next year we'll have a much longer timeline to give everyone plenty of time to sign up and signal boost the auction, and a longer turn around between the end of auction and when the works will be unveiled so creators don't feel so rushed. Keep an eye here on dreamwidth and
on the tumblr for information on that, which will likely be announced early in 2021.

Until then, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do let us know! Also, if anyone with any creative chops feels like creating any avatars or banners for the Tournament, that would be amazing.

Thank you all again!

First of all, thanks to all our amazing content creators and those who have bidded on the work, on this post you'll find all the details you need to make your donations and provide proof to your creator and to the TWT, so creators can begin on your work ASAP.

Secondly, I'd like to thank everyone for their patience with the very sudden extension of bidding. A lot has gone on in my private life since I started organising this event, and I really wanted to still do it, because I believe very strongly in what we're doing, but I just didn't have the emotional or physical ability to handle the closing of bidding last week, and much of the time I didn't even have internet access. So thank you. The plus side is that it gave people more time to bid, and we've earned extra donations to important charities as a result. Soon I'll be able to provide a tally of just how much was earned for charity, and will share it all with you here.

Now that bidding is complete, I will be going through the auction and verifying the winning bids. Please give me about 2 hours to complete this process. Winning bidders will have confirmation on their comment and be given further instructions on making their donations to one of our approved charities.

It is very simple and straightforward. If you have won only one auction, you can make a single donation for that amount (or more, if you're feeling generous!) If you have won multiple auctions, you have a choice of making separate donations, or combining all in one donation, but you must make note in your proof email of the different amounts for the different auctions you've won, totalling that amount.
You can make the donation in honour of the Trans Wizard Tournament or JK Rowling if you so desire, but it is not required.

After making your donation, send a screen cap of your confirmation page or confirmation email to your content creator AND to us here at the Trans Wizard Tournament by way of email to thursdaystgiles@gmail.com with the subject line of "Trans Wizard Tournament Donation."

Content creators--as soon as your winning bidder has been confirmed AND they've sent you proof of donation, you can begin working with them on what it is they'd like created! I will be posting a link very soon to an AO3 community where you can post the works once finished. This collection will be unveiled on the 31st of July, but creators can add to it any time before or after, and can also post elsewhere at anytime. It is not a requirement to post to the AO3 community, but I thought it would be a nice gift to JKR on her birthday, to show her all the wonderful works her tweets inspired ;)

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Thank you all again for your participation!

BIDDING HAS CLOSED!
All winning bids have been confirmed. Any bids made from this point onward are invalid. If you are a winning bidder, please make your donations and send proof of donation.

Bidding is open June 22nd - June 30th at 11:59pm PST

First of all, I want to thank our creators--over 60 people auctioning literally hundreds of fanworks, from fanvids and moodboards to fic and art, beta and brit-picking, this auction is packed full of amazing offers from some really talented folks. I encourage you all to look over everything that is on offer before diving in and making those bids.

I would ask that everyone take a look at the
How to Place a Bid post. You really need to make sure you're following the rules on how to bid in order for your bid to be valid. If it is not a valid bid, I will delete it, so please, just take a few minutes to make sure you understand how it works.

Bidding will take place on the TWTBiddingJournal. This allows us to keep everything organised and neat. With so many creators and works, it is important everything ends up in the proper place. Once there you can browse by the tags or just go post by post, or use the Creator List to find a specific creator you're looking for. And remember, PLEASE read the How to Bid post!

Good Luck and Happy Bidding!

ETA: There was a problem with anonymous commenting on the bidding journal. I do apologise for this--it's my first time running a fandom auction. I have fixed the issue, and now non-users will be able to comment and bid on

SIGN UPS ARE CLOSED
Instructions on Bidding will be posted soon!

Here is everything you need to know for signing up to make content as gifts to the donors! Sign Ups will be open through June 20th, 2020.

THIS IS NOT WHERE YOU BID. A separate post will go up for bidding after sign ups close. Any bids placed here are not valid. However, feel free to browse the posts to get an idea of what you want to bid on.

Creators, you can use the form below to let bidders know what characters (and potentially other fandoms) you feel comfortable writing, what types of works you like to create (fluff, angst, h/c, mature, gen, etc), what you absolutely will not write, and the length of fic you are offering.

At this point, it is just a vague outline of what sort of work you'll end up creating. You need bidders to give you the specific prompt. But when offering, please keep in mind the following:

First of all, as this is the Trans Wizard Tournament, your works must be centered around trans or non-binary characters and/or narrative. You don't need to the focus to be about the fact that the character(s) is trans, and you are welcome to include other aspects of the LGBTQA+ spectrum, but when offering, keep in mind that you are offering to write these characters as trans, and make sure you note what aspects of that you are and are not comfortable writing, what might be traumatic, triggering, or difficult for you, and offer accordingly.

Secondly, as this is a Harry Potter Fandom centric event, there are some restrictions on the subject of content, but I don't want it to be too restrictive as to discourage people from participating. To that end, there are two major categories that are acceptable for submission. You work MUST CONTAIN either Harry Potter characters (both canon and AUs-settings are acceptable) OR the Harry Potter universe as a setting for characters of other fandoms explored in an AU. So feel free to offer other fandoms, but limit them to 2, in addition to the HP fandom, and include your character list for those, as well.

In addition to traditional fandom content such as fic, art, vids, gifsets, etc, there is the option to offer labour. As outlined in the FAQ, this can be anything you are capable of offering, from beta and translation services, to offering to perform podfic, brit-picking, etc. While I know it is not the duty of our trans and nonbinary family to educate us, this could be a great opportunity for those cis-gender allies who've wanted to write trans characters, but have been hesitant out of fear of it coming across as inauthentic or offensive, to find someone willing to help provide specific trans beta work. If you want to contribute but are uncertain how, please consider this option. Again, just as with other work, note the length of works you're willing to beta/translate/podfic and the manhours you're willing to contribute.

Please use the form below to make your offering post in a comment.

This is our official list of suggested charities. I wanted to draw attention to some smaller groups working on a more local or grassroots level. And I wanted to highlight in particular those groups that work towards helping trans and non-binary people of colour, given the current political climate. Projects in the UK also warrant special attention, as Rowling's terf beliefs are representative of a larger problem within her country and efforts to limit the rights and protections of trans folks living there. Also, many of the UK-based organisations are in critical need of donations during at this moment.

I encourage you all to visit the sites, read and research, and see what resounds with you, personally!

Trans Justice Funding Project - Run by a panel of Black, Brown and Indigenous trans folks making grants directly to groups across the nation, the TJFP "is a community-led funding initiative...to support grassroots, trans justice groups run by and for trans people...We center the leadership of trans people organizing around their experiences with racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions."

Reclaim - A Minnesota-based organisation which is of particular help on the ground right now during the current political situation, Reclaim works "to provide financially and culturally accessible care to queer and trans youth and their families, as well as continue to train practitioners and partner in community to create systems of change at the intersection of gender and racial justice"

Mermaids - This organisation in the UK "has been supporting trans and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families since 1995," and is in desperate need of donations to keep their vital services in operation.

akt - This UK-based organisation "supports LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25 who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in an hostile environment," and they are working especially hard to create safe spaces for these young people during the Covid crisis.

TransWomen of Color Collective - This group works directly with community members "who exist at the nexus of state sanctioned violence; sex workers, poor people, homelessness...and folks deeply entrenched in complex, seemingly inescapable traumatic environments," and works to build "a network of trans, non-binary Black and people of color who are artists, healers, entrepreneurs and creators."

Gender Spectrum - Works a bit differently from many of the others on this list, focused on creating "gender sensitive and inclusive environments for all children and teens," by working to break down gender stereotypes that negatively impact children, and contribute to vicitimization, substance abuse, and suicide among transgender and gender-diverse youth, through professional development and training programs with educators.

Trans LifeLine - Is "a trans-led organization that connects trans people to the community, support, and resources they need to survive and thrive." They can provide peer support or help with legal issues, such as walking through the process of changing names, and providing the funds to do so.

National Center for Transgender Equality - Whose mission is "to change policies and society to increase understand and acceptance of transgender people" and "works to replace disrespect, discrimination, and violence with empathy, opportunity, and justice."

The Trevor Project - "The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning young people under 25."

Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund - "Is committed to ending discrimination based upon gender identity and expression and to achieving equality for transgender people through public education, test-case litigation, direct legal services, and public policy efforts."

If you would like to suggest an addition to this list, please let me know so it can be researched. There are a lot of other organisations out there that are doing great things, but it is important to realise we simply can't list them all, and I wanted to gather a diverse group that are working in different ways to address the myriad issues that face the transgender and gender diverse community.

What is The Trans Wizard Tournament?

The Trans Wizard Tournament is a donation drive specifically for charities in support of trans and non-binary people, in the form of an online auction of fanworks. This is not to to be confused with commissions, as neither the organisers nor the creators will receive any money or other form of compensation.

When can I sign up to offer fanworks? When can I start bidding? When will I receive my gift?
June 9th, 2020: Sign Ups Begin
June 20th, 2020: Sign Ups Close
June 22nd, 2020: Auction Begins
June 30th, 2020: Auction Ends; Winning Bidders Contacted
July 3rd, 2020: Proof of Donation Must Be Submitted
July 31st, 2020: AO3 Collection of Works Unveiled.
October 31st, 2020: All Works Must Be Completed Unless Otherwise Discussed With Bidder

Note, creators can begin creating work as soon as a winning bidder contacts them and details are worked out. Works can be submitted to winners at any point once completed, but works submitted to AO3 won't be unveiled until the 31st. While you have until October 31st to complete works, it would be amazing if we could have a nice number of complete works to unveil on July 31st, as both Harry Potter and JK Rowling's birthdays. Let's try to make a statement!

What types of fanworks are included?

You can offer any type of digital fanwork. A brief list of examples as follows, but if there is something I've not mentioned, feel free to send me a PM:
fic and podfic
artwork, including gifsets, manips, and moodboards
fanvids
fan labor, (for example, beta-work, translations, brit-picking, or in specific for this project, many have expressed an interest in writing about trans issues, but fear for getting things wrong, as they are not trans themselves--this is a great opportunity to offer to help writers by offering to help them write authentically about the experience, and fix problematic issues that may arise in their fic.)

The point is to encompass as many different types of offerings as possible, to allow for the participation by those with a broad variety of talents. When signing up, please be as specific as possible when describing your particular offerings. (As an example, which characters you're willing to work with, what type of fics you'll write ie fluff/angst/rating level, what form of fanart, the specific fan labor, etc.)

We are organising a separate auction for donated physical fanworks. If you have something you would like to donate, please contact us about making a listing.

Can I offer more than one thing?

Yes. We are hesitant to put a limit on how many gifts you can offer, but would has that you please take time to really consider what you'll be able to follow through on in a timely manner. Creating fanwork can be difficult especially given current events. Please don't over extend yourself. I would suggest strictly limiting the length/complexity of the works offered. Also, please sign up for each different TYPE of work individually (that is if you're offering three different types/lengths of fic, you can do so in one post; if you want to offer a fic, a moodboard, and a beta, you need to make 3 different posts).

Of course we want to generate as many donations as possible, but it doesn't help to overpromise and then not be able to follow through. It can cause people to lose faith in fandom auctions, and be less likely to participate and donate in the future. Please only offer if you are willing to make this a priority, and only offer as much as you're able. Offering a single item is not only allowed, it is a wonderful opportunity to give all your focus to a spectacular gift for a donor.

I have a WIP/planned project similar to the bidder’s prompt, can I use that to fulfill my auction?

This is something you need to discuss with your bidder. In general, anything that has already been partially published, either as a WIP or early draft, shouldn't be used to fulfill a prompt. However some bidders might wish to see a continuation of a WIP or reworking of an older fanwork, in which case it would be fine. Opening dialogue with your bidder will help you understand exactly what they want, if what you're working on fits their prompt, and if they're okay with you using it. But please don't come into this assuming it will be okay.

What causes/nonprofits are you supporting this year?

Complete list will be coming soon, and will include non-profits such as TransWomen of Color Collective, The Trevor Project, The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, Trans Lifelife, and more. I have already been informed of other organisations on the local level in different cities, states, and countries and am researching and compiling the list. Please let me know if there is an organisation you'd like to see included!

I’m offering fanwork but I would like my bidder to donate to a different organisation/I'm bidding but would prefer to donate to a different organisation.

We encourage bidders and creators to donate to charities/nonprofits from out list, but recognise there are many worthwhile organisations across the globe that simply haven't gained attention for their work. Creators will have the opportunity of listing other nonprofits when signing up, and bidders can make suggestions for additions to the list. These suggestions must be made during the sign up period, so that we have time to verify that these are legitimate organisations. Bidders and creators should have a clear agreement over which organisation(s) they will be donating to before donation takes place. These charities must be for trans and/or non-binary communities.

Can't you get in trouble legally for selling fanworks?

To be clear, we are not selling fanworks here. Donors will be making donations directly to the charities. At no point will the creators or the organisers be in possession of the money donated, nor receive any portion of it. Fanwork creators are showing their appreciation of these donations by creating gifts in recognition of the act.

How Can I Help?
There's a lot that needs to be done, from both an organisational standpoint, and through reaching out to fandom and signal-boosting. Please contact me on tumblr, dreamwidth, or by email with offers of help.

Why Dreamwidth?
A lot of people have expressed confusion over the use of dreamwidth. I understand that many don't want to have to sign up for yet another service. Dreamwidth has been around a long time, and along with livejournal, has been used for every fan auction I've participated in.
Dreamwidth doesn't have the problematic issues surrounding it that lj does, and it allows us to easily organise creator listings and bids on the same threads in a linear order. I know of no other site that would allow the auction to run this way without constant oversight by the mods to update bids and make sure everything is in order. I simply do not have the time, or number of volunteers to have this kind of supervision of the auction. I am absolutely open to other options for future auctions, if anyone has suggestions. Please do let me know.

Who is Running This Auction?
I (mokuyoubi) came up with the crazy idea, and many in fandom have provided input along the way. I want to pay special thanks to queenofthyme, without whom I doubt I would have gotten this all organised in time for bidding and has been such a relief to have around, helping with so many aspects. Also thank you to wanttobefictional for their help in getting listings ready.

JK Rowling is back on her shit. She has a problem with not knowing when to leave well-enough alone. Not only are the Harry Potter books are riddled with problematic stereotypes and characterisation, but even since the end of the series, she just can't seem to stop herself from making more and more additions to the story and characters that reinforce hurtful, negative stereotypes, and she makes inflammatory posts about sensitive issues that affect many of her fans.

Times are especially difficult across the world right now, and fandom provides a much needed escape. It is painful to see the creator of such a well-loved children's series use her powerful voice to sow hate and discord.

As a member of the queer community, I believe any form of gatekeeping is an effort to tear us apart from within. We need to be intersectional at all levels, lifting up our brothers and sisters and non-binary siblings of all orientation, skin colour, nationality, and walks of life.

I'll admit, my first thought on seeing Rowling's most recent slew of disgusting tweets, was "how can I allow my son and nephew (who is trans) be exposed to, and come to love her work, only to discover her true nature as I did?" But then I realised, Harry Potter doesn't belong just to her anymore. She can only destroy it if we let her. Fandom has, from its very beginnings, been about finding community and representation where it is otherwise denied.

And it struck me--what better way to push back against against Rowling’s narrow-minded and hateful statements than using the characters and world she created to help raise money for transgender rights. So I introduce to you, the first ever Trans Wizard Tournament!

In the spirit of past fandom fundraising auctions such as Fandom Hates Trump and Fandom Loves Puerto Rico, the Trans Wizard Tournament will allow fans to bid on new content from their favourite fandom creators, with winning bidders donating to one or several of our approved charities. The twist here is that this the prompts will centre around trans and nonbinary portrayals of of characters from the Harry Potter fandom.

More specific details, such as the schedule for signing up, bidding, proof of donations, and posting of creations, as well as a list of charities, and guidelines for content creators and bidders is coming very soon. The goal is tentatively to post the created content beginning on July 31st as a special present to not only JK Rowling, but a celebration of Harry Potter’s birthday, too.

I am asking any members of Harry Potter fandom and the trans community who are willing and able to help with this project to contact me. I need help organising and reaching out to content creators to participate. I’d love to have additional content to offer for auction, as in previous fandom auctions, whether prints of previously created artwork on the theme, special content specifically created for auction, or items of particular interest to the trans community.

Keep an eye on this journal for updates coming soon!
